Only members of the royal family and the most prominent representatives of the English High Society, were originally allowed to participate at the famous race of Ascot. The race was one of the most important British events and the participants were always in the spotlight, and so were their outfits that they wore to the big event. Quickly the famous ascot-style became very popular. In particular, the cutaway was an essential for the men in the late nineteenth century. To this suit they began to combine a special accessory, which resembled a scarf, was worn around the neck and fell with a wide brim on the chest. Thanks to the race, these ties became so famous, that they were named after the place where they were first recognized. Thus, the Ascot ties were a true fashion trend of the time.

Even though all this happened already over two hundred years ago, the accessories are still highly appreciated for their incomparable elegance and style.
In fact, the ascot ties are perfect to create an outfit in a classic British gentleman style, without being too flashy or dressy. This gives the ascot tie a particular charm and the wearer a special touch of elegance.

Traditionally, the ascots were, as I said, worn with a cutaway (tailcoat), but these days the trend has, however, opened up to new combinations.

Thanks to these new ways to wear the ascot ties, numerous Hollywood stars have rediscovered the accessory and combine the tie with a modern twist: for example, the actors Colin Farrell and Ed Westwick, who are in the photos above.
While Colin Farrell has decided to combine his grey ascot with a black jacket, dark grey waistcoat and a white shirt, the star of the series Gossip Girl presents himself with a grey, shiny tie with a pink shirt and a stylish pinstripe suit.
The style of these famous actors is definitely a great inspiration to how the ascot ties can be worn today, for an elegant but not too stiff outfit. The courage to try something new is worth it in any case! Your new accessory will certainly not go unnoticed!
